We recently had a stuffed animal sleepover. Here is the slideshow in case you want to see the shenanigans that these furry friends got into last night.

Many thanks to everyone that helped and offered ideas, and a HUGE thanks goes to our tweens & teens that "chaperoned."

Fizz Boom Read - Early Literacy

The Oradell Public Library announces its summer reading programs for children starting at ages 0 through grade 12.

The theme this year for children is “Fizz Boom Read” and there will be two versions of the programs. The first, an Early Literacy Program, is for children ages 0 and extends up to students entering Kindergarten.

This program is for children who are likely not yet reading or are just starting to read. It allows for caretakers reading to children and/or independent reading, but will also include activities between child and caretaker that are critical to developing the foundations for writing, reading, and language.

The second program is for students entering grades 1 through 6th and encourages independent reading. For students entering 7th grade through 12th grade, the library is proud to present “Spark a Reaction”. All three programs reward readers with prizes and incentives.

This year marks three important changes to the program. The first is that the Early Literacy program is extended to infants. This reflects the importance of establishing the building blocks of literacy skills within the first three years.

Second, our program for readers 1st grade through 6th grade will be switching to a minutes-based program. This will make it easier for those that are already counting their minutes for school assigned summer reading.

Lastly, we will be using Evanced, software provided for free by the New Jersey State Library, which will allow participants to log their reading online from any computer or mobile device with online capabilities.

Each reading program is designed to encourage voluntary, recreational reading, which has been strongly linked to increased literacy skills. Students that continue to read over the summer are more likely to be better prepared for the new school year, combating “summer slide”, the phenomenon of students losing some of the skills they gained during the past school year.

Summer Reading is an 8 week program that starts on June 30th and runs until August 22rd, 2014. Registration begins the week June 16th. Registration information can be done in person in the Junior Room at the Oradell Public Library or through this link.
